You can’t dictate to Buhari where he can host NEC Meetings – Presidency replies critics.

The Presidency, on Sunday, said since the President, Muhammadu Buhari, lives in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, no one could dictate to him where he can hold meetings within the premises.

It said no law barred the President from holding meetings in any section of the Presidential Villa.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, made the clarification in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja.

Some individuals, including a former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, had criticised the President for hosting a meeting of the All Progressives Congress’ National Executive Committee inside the Council Chamber.

They argued that the chamber is meant for government business and that the party’s NEC meeting did not fall under the category of government business that should be conducted from the hall.

But Shehu said it was erroneous to say that the meeting was convened at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said the meeting was a virtual one so that the protocol of social distancing could be observed and the President needed to address party leaders from any of his offices inside the Presidential Villa.

The presidential aide said while it was true that state governors and leaders of the National Assembly joined Buhari from the chamber where he spoke, the majority of the members connected via video calls.

2. Lagos and Ogun State have been infected with anti-church virus – Bishop Oyedepo says.

The Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church International, popularly known as Winners’ Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, says Lagos and Ogun states have been infected with anti-church virus, hence the decision to open markets and keep churches shut.

The cleric said this while delivering a sermon on Sunday.

Oyedepo said it was ironic that people in marketplaces no longer observe social distancing or hygiene, and they remain open, but the church is being suppressed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He argued that refusing to open the church was in contravention of the freedom of worship which is enshrined in the constitution.

The cleric added; “No handwashing, no nothing, everyone is in the market running over each other every day of the week, and there is no outbreak from the market but there is now outbreak, perceived outbreak from the church. Prophets are God’s voices to the nations. Caution!

Now, freedom of worship is no longer a constitutional right but now determined to buy some individuals. It is a hard thing to kick against the priest. This is no longer coronavirus in Lagos and Ogun. It is now anti-church virus clean and clear.”

Oyedepo said in the last one week, 10 people testified to have been healed of the disease.

The cleric argued that the church which had the power to heal people remained closed.

3. President Buhari mourns Adamawa Monarch, Stephens.

President Muhammadu Buhari has on Sunday, commiserated with the family of Col. Honest Irmiya Stephens (retd.), the Hama Bachama and paramount ruler of Bachama Kingdom in Adamawa State over the transition of the monarch.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President also condoled the Bachama Kingdom, the government and people of Adamawa State, noting that the late traditional ruler who received his staff of office in 2013, served his community, state and the nation creditably.

According to Buhari, the retired military officer and 28th ruler of Bachama Kingdom, “distinguished himself in the Nigerian Army and devoted his post-service years to promoting the development of his people and fostering unity of his fatherland.”

While urging the Bachama Kingdom to elect a worthy successor, the President prayed God to console all those who mourn the departed traditional ruler and grant his soul eternal rest.

4. You lied about APC meeting in council chambers – PDP replies Presidency.

The Peoples Democratic Party has rebuked the Presidency (PDP), for denying that the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was held inside the chambers of the Federal Executive Council.

Some individuals had criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for hosting a meeting of the APC NEC inside the council chamber.

But while responding, the Presidency had on Sunday, stated that Buhari lives in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, and so therefore nobody should tell him where he can hold meetings within the premises of the Villa.

The PDP has, however, said it is unfortunate that the Presidency would post a denial even when the media and the public space are already awash with photographs and videos of the NEC meeting, with APC leaders physically in attendance inside the FEC chambers where Buhari presided.

The party said it is now shocked that Buhari’s Presidency could make such denial, “even when the world watched Mr President addressing the applauding APC leaders, in addition to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, physically administering oath of office on the Chairman of APC National Caretaker Committee, Mai Buni, on the floor of the FEC chamber.”

A statement issued on Sunday by the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, partly read, “It is a fact before Nigerians that the meeting was physical and only virtual to the extent that some members of the APC NEC members were linked via conference call.”
